This application example is about the measurement of antenna elements integrated into the parachutes of planetary entry probes. Firstly, the antenna elements have been characterized in far field with standard laboratory test. Eventually, the antenna elements have been integrated in a real parachute and the link performance measured directly in the field, by launching the parachute from a hot air balloon.
The measured patch antennas operate at C-band and are to be integrated in a railway signaling system. The antennas are fully characterized in standard conditions and in typical outdoor environmental conditions:
dedicated fixtures have been used to directly measure the antennas in the Laboratory with deposits of several debris types (i.e. ice slab, snow, dust, grease etc.).
This application example involves the characterization of a densely sample GPR array to be used for de-mining applications. The array is composed of 35 bow-tie UWB antenna (nominal frequency >2 GHz) featuring co-polar and cross-polar channels, with balanced feeding.
The measurement consisted of the complete characterization of each single array module as well as of different array channels, in terms of frequency bandwidth, input impedance and VSWR, impulse response, isolation between different channels.
