Ship EDF is a software framework conceived for the electromagnetic design of naval vessels. It is a comprehensive system capable of supporting concurrent electromagnetic design and assisting the optimization of naval platforms. It is a modular system which can provide coverage for EMC/EMI assessment including antenna placement and radiation hazard identification, as well as radar cross section (RCS) and infrared (IR) signature analysis.

Below Deck Module:

Ship EDF Below Deck is a framework which aims to provide support in solving the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) issues found in a ship's below deck environment. This environment consists of numerous different pieces of automation, command, control and communications equipment interconnected by thousands of cables. The Below Deck module provides a 3D graphical interface for generating a numerical model (mesh) of both a ship's internal compartments and 3D cable paths as well as an Oracle database for the management of equipment characteristics and storage of analyses.

Ship EDF Below Deck allows designers and ship builders to identify potential critical issues caused by EMI on cables and equipment during the early design phases rather than later in the construction phase or acceptance testing. This avoids the possible need for an expensive and time consuming re-wiring job.

Capabilities:

Ship EDF Below Deck allows the early identification of potential EMC critical issues such as:

  • Analysis of radiated and conducted interference on cables
  • Cable/shield quality in comparison with the expected EMI level
  • Cable routes and cable separation distances
  • EM field levels with respect to equipment qualification or safety performance standards

Ship EDF Below Deck's multiconductor network analysis includes:

  • Tools for the evaluation of the per unit length electrical parameters of multiconductor transmission lines (cables or complex cable bundles)
  • Tools for the electrical characterization of multiconductor transmission line terminations
  • A numerical solver based on the EM topology proposed by Baum-Liu-Tesche (BLT) to calculate EM coupling in multiconductor transmission line networks

Ship EDF Below Deck's 3D analysis tools include:

  • 3D CAD/mesher able to model a ship's internal compartments
  • 3D EM Method of Moments (MoM) solver for the evaluation of internal field levels
  • Interaction between the 3D and BLT solvers to provide evaluation of an incident field/current on a 3D path and use of the incident field/current as a distributed source in the BLT computation

  • Managed antenna, equipment and cable library. Allows the creation and storage of HF and V/UHF antenna models, EM equipment models and cable types
  • Project database management – data is associated with individual ship projects to ensure data evolution tracking and data consistency through all design phases
  • 3D geometrical modeling tools allow the configuration of a ship's external and internal structures, antennas and cable bundling paths
