The “AhEAD” project for the advanced design and testing of polarimetric X-band antenna for avionic weather radar officially started on June 16th, 2014, and on the 24th of June IDS hosted the Kick-Off meeting at its premises in Pisa.
It is the latest project to be awarded to IDS in the framework of the Clean Sky Program. Two other projects – CLEOPATRA and GENIAL – have been successfully completed, while another four are under implementation. AhEAD therefore brings to seven the total number of projects awarded to IDS within the framework of Cleansky since 2011.
The project aims at conducting the evaluation and selection of applicable antenna technologies/architectures, designing and testing of the best selected architecture up to TRL 4 and identifying the technological roadmap for future development up to the highest TRL levels. It is a relatively challenging project, having to face the currently unsolved problems in the design and manufacturing of polarimetric antennas for weather radar.
To carry out the project, IDS will lead a consortium made up of Rockwell Collins France, a leading company in the design and manufacturing of avionics weather radar and the Netherlands’ Organization for Applied Scientific Research – TNO, one of the most eminent research centres in Europe.
The project will last eighteen months and finish in December 2015.
