Georgia, October 19th. Since May 2012 an IBIS-L unit has been installed at the Vardzia archaeological site in Georgia. The system, purchased and managed by the Georgian National Agency for Cultural Heritage Preservation, is aimed at supporting the agency in evaluating the stability of the Vardzia Byzantine Monasteries, one of the most prestigious archaeological sites in Georgia. The use of IBIS-L on such an important site demonstrates that such a technology, thanks to its non-invasive nature, is an ideal solution to monitor the stability of cultural heritage sites.
The results of the first 6 months of monitoring activities were recently presented during the International Workshop on the Rock Slide Mitigation of Vardzia Byzantine Monasteries, organized by ISPRA - Geological Survey of Italy, along with the Georgian National Agency for Cultural Heritage Preservation, and held in Georgia in the middle of October 2012 (16th-19th). The two day workshop involved a selected number of invited experts/speakers in the Archaeological park of Vardzia Monastery and was aimed at investigating the rock instability processes affecting the Byzantine Vardzia Monasteries and caves. This activity was part of the Landslides and Cultural & Natural Heritage Network of the International Consortium on Landslides (ICL).
