IDS attend Smart Shield 2013, the Army Corp of Engineers' Open Day

24th June 2013, Rome. IDS attended Smart Shield 2013, an open day hosted by the Italian Army Corps of Engineers in Cecchignola, near Rome. The main theme for the day was the concept of "Force Protection"; the role of the Army Corps of Engineers remains essential in attempting to minimize the risks involved for military contingents engaged in missions abroad and there is therefore a strong emphasis on continuous training and innovative technologies.

Selected small and medium Italian and international enterprises were invited to display and demonstrate systems designed to aid military ground in their various missions, especially in the fields of military engineering and the security of personnel in operational theaters.

IDS displayed the capabilities of our current GPR and interferometric radar systems for civilian applications and described how these technologies could possibly be used in the future to develop systems designed to tackle specific military tasks. IDS also exhibited a range of innovative new prototype systems and developments to senior members of the Italian military, including the Commander of the Land Forces Command, Army General Roberto Bernardini. These included systems for detecting the location of incoming hostile fire, especially from snipers, and for looking through walls using advanced radar technology.

As well as allowing IDS to showcase our range of technologies and solutions, the open day allowed IDS to improve our understanding of the needs and requirements of the Italian land forces in modern day asymmetric battlefield environments such as currently found in Afghanistan. In his closing speech the Commander of the Corps of Engineers, General Antonio Li Gobbi, stressed the importance of collaboration between the military forces involved in theater and companies in the sector of defense

Finally we would like to thank the Italian Army Corps of Engineers, Arma del Genio, for their hospitality and for inviting IDS to share the day with them.
