IDS (UK) and IDS (Roma) part of the European team that wins ‘Best in Class’ SESAR Project Award at ATC Global 2012

In March 2012, the SESAR Joint Undertaking (SESAR JU) announced the winners of the 2012 SESAR Project Awards at ATC Global.

For the category ‘Best in Class’ award, the jury was unanimous in voting SESAR 15.3.2 project entitled ‘Navigation Infrastructure Rationalisation’ as the winner, achieving two major deliverables during the year. The jury found that project deliverables were on time and with “very high quality”.

The 15.3.2 project consists of four teams: Eurocontrol, NATS, Thales and ENAV. IDS (Roma) and IDS (UK) formed part of the ENAV team.

The project aimed at providing key inputs on rationalising the conventional VOR/DME and DME/DME navigation infrastructure. This infrastructure is the basis for aircraft navigation in Europe and the project focuses on its evolution towards a future integrated ATM architecture.

IDS (UK) used the EMACS ASUV tool to model the navigation infrastructures of 11 European States: Italy, Greece, Turkey, Romania, Bulgaria, FYROM, Serbia/Montenegro, Moldova, Cyprus, Malta and Albania. The corresponding State Reports considered, for each country, the current operational requirements for approach and landing and included a list of aerodromes having IFR operations. For these aerodromes, the availability of ILS PA and Conventional NPA were tabulated, together with any conventional or RNAV SID and STARs serving the aerodromes. Methodology introduced by Eurocontrol was described and applied to identify critical conventional navigation facilities and those potential VOR and NBD that can be removed. Where RNAV procedures are to be used, TMAs were identified. For each of these TMA, a list of DME facilities required was produced. An assessment was performed to identify the en-route DME environment based upon the DME facilities required following the rationalisation process and the DME facilities required for TMA use. The main objectives of this report were to identify possible solutions for the rationalization and optimization of ground navigation aids network in the IP2 timeframe, taking into consideration the foreseen evolution of navigation applications.
